Message from our new Superintendent, Michael Gill:
I am extremely excited and proud to have taken over the position of Superintendent of Schools from retiring Superintendent Ms. Mary Beth Fiore on January 1, 2020. My first two months back in Elmira Heights have been fantastic with all the interactions I have been able to have with staff, students, parents and community members.
I say back because, as many may know, I taught at Edison High School from 1999-2010. I also coached a few sports, advised clubs, and participated in many extra-curricular activities as a part of the school experience. I tell people I grew up as a kid in Schuyler County, but I grew up as an adult and a professional here in Elmira Heights. I left in 2010 to pursue opportunities in school administration that took me across Steuben County working at all building levels and as Superintendent of Schools. In many ways I spent the last decade working my way back here to Elmira Heights.
I have always been proud of the school experiences we here in the Elmira Heights Central School District provide the children and young adults of our community. Ours is a mission to serve our students in the best way we can. We provide our students the building blocks they will build their lives on.
Our small, close-knit school community creates a special atmosphere where each student is known as an individual, and each student matters in creating a rich school experience for everyone. We have a talented and dedicated staff who take pride in this culture of connectedness. Our schools reflect our community; small in scale but big on hard work, determination, and pride in being Elmira Heights. It is this strong small school community that has drawn me back.
I want to take an opportunity to thank our School Board for their foresight and commitment to arrange an extended time for me to work with retiring Superintendent Ms. Mary Beth Fiore. Being able to work with her for this transition period has allowed me to hit the ground running as Superintendent.
It’s been great to see many familiar faces, and to have a chance to get to know many new ones during the time I have been back. One priority for me as I enter back into our school and community is recognizing this is no longer the 2000’s. This is 2020. Although I may know some history of the district, we are not who we were then. I look forward to connecting with more of you as we start this new decade, this new chapter for Elmira Heights CSD. This is a great school and community, and I am proud to be back as we build our future together.
Finally, thank you to all of you who participated in the interview process and to so many of you who have gone out of your way to welcome me so warmly back into the Heights family. I look forward to working for our students in this great place we call The Heights!
Michael F. Gill, Superintendent of Schools
